Kitchen Cabinet Styles: Shaker, Flat-Panel, Raised-Panel

Cabinet door style sets the entire tone of your kitchen. It's the largest visual element in the room and the one guests notice first. Here's what you need to know about the three most popular styles we install on Long Island.
Shaker style is our most-requested door by far—about 60% of our projects. It features a flat center panel with a simple, square-edge frame. Shaker works in virtually every kitchen style: traditional, transitional, modern, farmhouse, and coastal. It's the safe bet that never looks trendy or dated.
Shaker cabinets come in painted (white, gray, navy, sage green are current favorites) or stained finishes. Painted shaker in white or light gray is the single most popular kitchen cabinet in America right now, and for good reason—it's clean, versatile, and photographs beautifully for resale.
Flat-panel (also called slab) doors are the modernist choice. No frame, no detail—just a smooth, flat surface. They're popular in contemporary and minimalist kitchens, especially in matte or high-gloss finishes. Flat-panel works particularly well with integrated handles (no visible hardware).
Raised-panel doors have a center panel that's slightly raised above the frame, creating a dimensional, traditional look. They're the classic choice for colonial and formal kitchens. Raised-panel with a cherry or maple stain reads 'established home' in the best way.
On cost: flat-panel is typically the least expensive (fewest machining steps). Shaker is mid-range. Raised-panel is the most expensive due to the additional routing and finishing required. The difference is usually $2,000-$5,000 across a full kitchen.
Our advice: pick the style that matches your home's architecture and your personal taste, not the trend of the year. A shaker door will look appropriate in 2026 and in 2036. That's the kind of longevity you want from a $15,000+ investment.
